Experiences of a FileMaker Pro Database Developer

A Time for Thanks

It’s that time of year to celebrate Thanksgiving, to be thankful for the many blessing that we all have. This year, I have the pleasure of working with a military psychiatrist, CDR Alfredo “Devil Doc” Baker, MD, MC, USN, who is stationed in Afghanistan. He contacted me asking for help with FileMaker Pro. I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to show appreciation, in some small way, for our troops stationed abroad.

I decided to turn the project into a case study in hopes that it might help others who are also just beginning to use FileMaker Pro and want to know where to start. What you’ll find hidden in the transcripts of our correspondence is a glimpse into what’s happening with our Soldiers and how they feel about defending our Country. This experience has left me with a stronger sense of pride about the United States, as well as great appreciation and thankfulness for the men and women who serve to defend us.

I hadn’t heard from the Commander in over a week, so I sent an email asking how things were going. His response below deserves our thoughts and prayers this Thanksgiving.

Commander Baker: Hello Matthew. My apologies for taking so long to respond. We had an unfortunate event in which one of our Marines suffered a double amputation secondary to an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). This really hit us hard, especially when there is already a mental/physical fatigue due to this long year deployment. The good news is that he is doing well but as it always happens in this kind of event, not only there is a physical damage but an emotional as well. I have been taking care of those that were witness of this atrocity and trying to minimize the emotional and physical stress.

I will be working on the database this weekend. Thanks again. God Bless my friend.

If you know anyone that has served or is serving in our Armed Forces, please make sure to tell them “Thank You” this Thanksgiving.
